1. Dates of Operation and Lift Access

The ski resort of Livigno will usually operate from late November to early May of each season, and because of its high elevation the resort has very stable snow cover most of the times of operation.  There are 31 chairlifts and gondolas that can carry 47,000 skiers per hour, with access to 110 kilometers of slopes.  There are three separate ski areas in Livigno, Mottolino, Costaccia and Carosello 3000, and all three can be accessed on the same ski pass.

2. Location and Directions to Livigno

Livigno is easily accessible in the winter by car or bus from nearby Italian and Swiss cities.  Roads are open from Milan and Zurich for those connecting via plane or train from other European or international locations.  Some routes require vehicles to carry chains in case of snowfall.  Part of the charm of Livigno is that is isolated and free of the large crowds and high prices of other resorts.

3. Types of Ski Terrain and Elevation

The base elevation of Livigno is 1816 meters and the top elevation is 2950 meters.  The slopes occupy both sides of the valley, offering a unique opportunity to ski with two vantage points and a wide variety of ski terrain.  The valley runs from north to south ensuring that one can enjoy sunshine on the slopes all day long.  The terrain is varied for any ability on over 64 different slopes, with 35% intermediate runs, 48% advance and 17% expert, most of which is free of vegetation.

4. Snowfall and Average Snow Depth

The high altitude location of Livigno brings abundant snowfall and the coverage is excellent most of the season.  Snow depths can range from 1 to 2 meters depending on the month and recent snowfall.  February and March tend to have the best snow depth, while very early and late season may require use of snowmaking to provide adequate cover.  The lack of vegetation on most slopes makes for few exposed obstacles at all elevations, and spring skiing can be excellent.

5. Food and Beverages

One of the attractions of Livigno is the affordable price for après-ski beverages and food available at the many cafes and restaurants in the village.  For those in ski apartments it is possible to self-cater as well, but there are many good choices among the 50 or more restaurants to sample.  Because it is usually possible to ski right down to the village level, you can take lunch and then be right back on the slopes in the afternoon.

6. Cost of Lift Tickets

The most recent season’s lift ticket prices were 43 Euros for adults and 35 Euros for children and seniors.  Afternoon passes are available for 31 Euros and the best value is the six-day pass costing 215 Euros for adults and 148 Euros for children and seniors.  The six-day pass may also include access to several other nearby Italian ski areas to add variety to your ski vacation.  Please inquire for current arrangements on this type of pass.

7. Other Activities

Livigno is renowned for its duty free shopping and even the most die-hard skiers will enjoy perusing the hundreds of shops offering perfumes, electronics and other luxury goods at bargain prices.  Other winter sports are offered as well including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobile tours and dogsled rides.
